NATURAL CONDITIONS

France is the country with the largest area in Europe after Russia and Ukraine. Here is the highest mountain peak in Europe - Mont Blanc in the Alps. Alps is located in the south-east, extending also in Switzerland and Italy, they are north of the Jura Mountains and the southwest border of the Pyrenees. The Massif Central Plateau is a mountain much older. To the north and east are other old mountain formations: Armozican Massif, Vosges Mountains and the Ardennes plateau. More than half the country is plain crossed by rivers Garonne, Seine, Loire, Rhone and Saone.

CLIMATE

The north-west of France has a mild oceanic climate, whose conditions are determined by the north-atlantic current. In the east the winter is cold, summer is generally warmer and less rainfall. The level of precipitation in the western coastal area is over 800 mm, in the east only in some places reached 600 mm. In the mountains the climate is colder, precipitation is 1000 mm, falling mostly as snow in winter.

CITIES 

The administrative, financial, industrial and cultural center of the country is Paris, which annually attracts large masses of tourists worldwide.
 

 

Important road junction and industrial city is Lyon (1.3 million inhabitants) founded by the Romans at the confluence of rivers Saone and Rhone.

Marseille (1.2 million inhabitants) was a colony founded by the 
Greeks around 600 BC and was the major center in Roman times.

 

 

Lille is the fourth largest settlement (959,000 people) in the north.
